From SIGART to SIGAI

Dear colleagues,

For more than 30 years, SIGART has proudly represented the artificial intelligence community within the ACM. Today, nearly one thousand members strong, we cast a broad net throughout the world. We support many AI community activities, from conferences to student scholarships, and provide an AI perspective within the broader ACM organization.

Today, however, artificial intelligence is widely associated with the initials "AI," both within computer science and more broadly in the popular literature. Indeed, in a recent routine review, the chairs of all the other SIGs, along with other ACM officials, agreed that our SIGART acronym does not readily evoke our common interest. We seek to be more readily recognizable: within the ACM community, among students, and to the outside world.

With your agreement, therefore, we would like to change our acronym to SIGAI. We believe that our new acronym will solidify our identity, update our image, and help new AI practitioners find us and join our community. Our full name, the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, will remain the same.

Over the next 30 days, we welcome your feedback on SIGAI as our new acronym. Please send us your comments: , , .

Sincerely,

Yolanda Gil, SIGART Chair
Sanmay Das, SIGART Vice-Chair
Susan L. Epstein, SIGART Treasurer
